Project Overview

INFAMOUS: The Controversial Works of Jean-Michel Basquiat is an exhibition catalogue editorial project that showcases the most divisive works by the world famous artist. Within the scope of the project, I created a typography system that showcases the not so obvious warning signs of mental health concerns and addiction tendencies.
I felt this approach, while dark, is true to the heart of the late artist. He sacrificed his well being for his craft. Key insight from interviews shows how troubled and damaged his mind came to be in the later stages of addiction. His work was so divisive and raw because each piece truly allowed the viewer a small window of insight to how his mind works and his life experience.

INFAMOUS: The Controversial
Works of Jean-Michel Basquiat

The personality and the artworks of Jean-Michel Basquiat are worlds apart. While he became famous in the early 1980’s, his works grew popular before he did. His first impression on the world of street art and neo-expressionism started in just that, the street. His graffiti tag “SAMO” became recognized in the streets of New York City. While anonymous, Basquiat created a persona that sparked a movement in the underground that would later become a global phenomenon.
